Mississippi Opens Shelters and Safe Rooms Ahead of Hurricane Isaias
Multiple shelters and safe rooms are open across Mississippi as Hurricane Isaias makes landfall, according to the Mississippi Emergency Management Agency (MEMA). County officials reported the locations through local channels, with residents encouraged to seek safety in these designated sites.
Shelter locations include the Harrison County County Farm Shelter at 15035 County Farm Road in Gulfport, George County Shelter at 3161 Cooks Corner Road in Lucedale, Hancock County Necaise Shelter at 30360 Highway 603 in Perkinston, and Jackson County EOC Shelters at 5500 Ballpark Road in Van Cleave and 1843 Highway 613 in Moss Point.
Safe rooms are also available in some counties. The Pearl River County Fairgrounds at 124 Rodeo Street in Poplarville and the Picayune Community Safe Room at 501 Laurel Street are among those open for residents seeking shelter.
Officials emphasized that shelters and safe rooms are operated at the local level and are open based on reports received by MEMA. Additional facilities, such as cooling centers, are also available, including the Harrison County Cooling Center open Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. and 1 p.m. to 4 p.m., and the Salvation Army Center of Hope at 2019 22nd Street in Gulfport.
