Basket making showcased at Mississippi Hills Heritage and Folklife Festival in October

The Mississippi Hills Heritage and Folklife Festival is set to take place from October 22 to 24, 2026, in New Albany. The event will highlight the craft of basket making, with demonstrations scheduled throughout the weekend.

J.D. Jones will demonstrate basket making on Thursday and Friday, while Jamie VanOekel will showcase the craft on Saturday. The festival’s community day is Saturday from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., featuring games and ribbons for children at 11 a.m., according to organizers.

The event is supported by local and national organizations, including WTVA 9 News, the Mississippi Arts Commission, the National Endowment for the Arts, and MPB — Mississippi Public Broadcasting. Additional sponsors include the Union County Development Association, Visit New Albany, and the New Albany Main Street Association.
