Understanding How Lightning Forms

Lightning is a sudden electrostatic discharge that occurs during thunderstorms. It is caused by the buildup of electrical charges within storm clouds.

As water droplets and ice particles collide within the cloud, they create a separation of positive and negative charges. When the electrical potential becomes high enough, a discharge occurs, producing lightning.

Lightning can strike the ground, the air, or within the cloud itself. Understanding the process helps meteorologists predict and study severe weather events.

For more information on lightning and weather patterns, consult weather experts or trusted meteorological sources.
