City advises against burning storm debris in New Albany

Residents of New Albany are being advised not to burn tree limbs and storm debris left from recent ice storms within city limits. Officials say the practice is generally prohibited under the city’s burn ordinance.

City officials explain that many residents live in close proximity, raising concerns about smoke, ash, and fire hazards. They note that neighbors may object to smoke drifting onto their properties, and there are health risks for individuals with underlying health conditions.

While there are limited circumstances under which burning natural vegetation may be permitted, these are rare. The city has guidelines and regulations on file at city hall and fire stations. Residents are encouraged to take storm-damaged limbs and debris to the roadside for collection, but not onto the roadway itself.

Officials emphasize that obtaining a permit for open burning is unlikely and that residents should rely on city pickup services for storm debris disposal. They thank residents for their cooperation and understanding regarding safety and health reasons behind the policy.
