New Albany Students Get Creative with Literacy Building Project

Third-grade students at New Albany Elementary School took part in a classroom transformation called “Builders of Knowledge,” designed to make literacy review interactive and engaging. Students donned hard hats and used construction-themed materials to reinforce reading skills, with the goal of encouraging them to “build” their literacy abilities.

The project was funded in part by the Endowment for Excellence in Education classroom grant program. The endowment was established in 1986 through the efforts of School Board member Dean Provence, a New Albany native and active volunteer in the community. Following his death, the fund was renamed in his memory and has since provided approximately $437,000 in support to classrooms within the district.

The endowment receives funding through individual and corporate donations, as well as fundraising events organized by its board. Contributions are accepted year-round and can be mailed to the district at 1112 Wesson Tate Drive, New Albany, MS 38652, addressed to Melanie Anderson, according to district officials.
