Mississippi Department of Transportation Issues Winter Weather Update
The Mississippi Department of Transportation has issued a winter weather advisory as of 9 a.m. Wednesday, warning of dangerous conditions on several major highways.
Both directions of Interstate 55 from the Mississippi state line to north of Yalobusha are experiencing severe icing and extreme congestion. There are also reports of fallen trees, power lines, and storm debris along the route in Yalobusha County, making travel hazardous, MDOT officials said.
Interstate 22 from the Mississippi state line to Potts Camp, at the Marshall-Benton County line, is also heavily affected by ice and congestion. Authorities strongly recommend avoiding these routes unless necessary.
MDOT reports ice on roads and bridges across 28 counties, including Alcorn, Benton, Bolivar, Calhoun, Coahoma, DeSoto, Grenada, Humphreys, Issaquena, Lafayette, Lee, Leflore, Marshall, Panola, Pontotoc, Prentiss, Quitman, Sharkey, Sunflower, Tallahatchie, Tate, Tippah, Tishomingo, Tunica, Union, Washington, Yalobusha, and Yazoo.
Motorists are urged to stay off affected roadways for safety. The MDOT Traffic app and MDOTtraffic.com provide real-time road condition updates in case of emergencies.
