Mississippi braces for severe ice storm with power outages and dangerous cold

A significant ice storm is affecting a large portion of Mississippi, causing trees and limbs to fall and resulting in widespread power outages, according to the Mississippi Emergency Management Agency.

Roads across northern and central Mississippi are covered with ice, making travel hazardous. The agency urged residents to stay home, stay safe, and stay warm as temperatures continue to drop throughout the day.

Temperatures are expected to fall further tonight, with wind chills in the teens or below. Officials warn that prolonged exposure could lead to frostbite or hypothermia. Warming shelters are open statewide, and residents in need can find a list of resources on the agency’s website.

MEMA is in contact with all 82 counties and continues to monitor the storm. The agency encourages residents to take care of themselves, neighbors, and pets during the severe weather event.
