Interstates 22 and 55 reopen in northern Mississippi amid winter conditions

Interstates 22 and 55 in northern Mississippi reopened Friday morning after closures due to winter weather, according to the Mississippi Department of Transportation. All lanes of I-22/U.S. 78 from Red Banks (Exit 21) to the Tennessee state line are now accessible, MDOT said.

The section of I-55 north of Como (Exit 257) has also reopened. Despite the openings, crews remain on site, and icy conditions, debris, and hazards persist in these areas. MDOT advises against travel unless absolutely necessary.

Emergency officials report ice on roads and bridges across 21 counties, including Alcorn, Benton, Bolivar, Calhoun, Coahoma, DeSoto, Grenada, Lafayette, Leflore, Marshall, Panola, Prentiss, Quitman, Sunflower, Tallahatchie, Tate, Tippah, Tishomingo, Tunica, Washington, and Yalobusha counties.

Drivers are encouraged to check live road conditions via the MDOT Traffic App or visit MDOTtraffic.com. Counties with icy conditions are shaded blue on the map, and authorities urge only essential travel in these areas due to winter weather.

More information is available at MDOT’s website.
